Shawnie Shaffer is a mental health counselor with experience in hospital-based social work, crisis intervention, case management, and substance use treatment. She has supported adolescents with alcohol and substance use disorders, individuals and families in crisis, survivors of domestic violence, and those coping with sudden or ongoing health concerns across crisis centers, residential programs, shelters, and hospital settings.
Shawnie’s approach focuses on understanding each client’s experiences and the systems impacting their lives while creating a safe, non-judgmental space for growth. With a strong background in chemical dependency and crisis care, her clinical interests include trauma, grief, anxiety, and depression. She believes healing involves recognizing internal strengths, setting boundaries, and learning to manage triggers.
Shawnie earned a dual associate degree in Chemical Dependency Counseling and Human & Social Services from Stark State College and a Bachelor’s in Social Work from The University of Akron. She is currently completing her Master’s in Social Work at The University of Akron, with graduation anticipated in May 2026.
Outside of work, Shawnie enjoys spending time with her close-knit family, lifelong friends, two cats, and small chihuahua. She and her fiancé love traveling and look forward to planning a longer trip after graduation. A fun fact: Shawnie is also a licensed cosmetologist and previously worked in the restaurant industry, experiences that continue to shape her communication and creativity.
“In therapy, I believe everyone can benefit from support, no matter how big or small the challenge may seem.”
