Gordo Ciapala is a school-based therapist who works primarily with adolescents ages 14–18. He brings a unique blend of mental health and medical experience, having worked in juvenile corrections, respite care, community therapy, and school-based settings, as well as serving the community as a registered nurse. His background includes outpatient, residential, school, and hospital environments, giving him a well-rounded understanding of the challenges facing youth today.
Gordo uses an integrative, trauma-informed approach that incorporates mindfulness, Narrative Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). He is actively working toward further specialization in trauma-focused practices. Central to his work is creating a safe, non-judgmental space where clients feel comfortable being honest and feel supported, allowing therapy to focus on meaningful change rather than fear of judgment.
Gordo earned all his degrees from Youngstown State University, including a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work with a minor in Integrated Technologies, a Master of Social Work, and an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing. He has been involved with the NASW Ohio Chapter and continues to explore community engagement opportunities.
Outside of work, Gordo enjoys lifting, practicing mindfulness and meditation, and listens to books and podcasts. He also spent two years taking vocal lessons and remains involved with Youngstown State University’s Penguin Productions as a community volunteer. Gordo believes empowerment in therapy comes from trust, encouragement, and helping clients recognize their own capacity to succeed with support.
